Pukalani, which means “heavenly gate” or “window to heaven” in Hawaiian, is the largest town in upcountry Maui. Situated on the slopes of Mt. Haleakala at an elevation of 1,526 feet (465 m), Pukalani’s temperature is cooler than the temperature in towns located at or near sea level.

While the place evokes a laid-back, country atmosphere, it has a commercial shopping center, community and recreation centers and an 18-hole golf club and sports fields.

The Pukalani Shopping Center contains everything needed for up-country living, including a grocery store, hardware store, a few banks and a Post Office.

The Pukalani Superette is a local, family-owned market since 1955, selling groceries, local produce, household goods and prepared foods.

The Upcountry pool is a free public swimming pool and a great place to go with the kids. There is a large lap pool, a teaching pool aka the keiki pool and a 1 foot deep baby wading pool. The baby pool is often warm as it is  shallow and exposed to the sun. The facility has restrooms, showers, locker rooms, lifeguards and bleachers.

Set in the gentle hillsides of “Up-Country” Maui, Pukalani Country Club overlooks the Pacific Ocean and offers breath-taking panoramic views of the Valley Isle of Maui.

The climate in Pukalani is warm, humid, windy, and partly cloudy. Over  the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 60°F to 82°F and is rarely below 55°F or above 85°F.
